Local Biker's Cancer Fundraiser: Special Screening of "Bike The Divide&

Note From Dawn: We received this information 6/28/10 and thought we'd share it with BSBC Club members in case anyone is interested in attending. Please know that the Bay Shore Bicycle Club is NOT sponsoring this event. This info is being shared just in case you are interested:

My name is Erik Mathy. I'm a Green Bay native (West DePere Class of 1990, in fact) currently residing in Alameda, CA. This upcoming weekend we're having two cancer fundraiser cycling events. One on Friday night in Marinette and the other Saturday morning in Green Bay. We've arranged for screenings of Ride the Divide, the documentary of the 2008 edition of the Tour Divide.

Movie details: http://www.ridethedividemovie.com/
Marinette Event: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/115509

Green Bay Event: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/115511

Local Details:

Bay Park Cinema
Green Bay, WI

Movie Times: 9:00am
Tickets: $5/advanced, $10/door. No passes or punch cards, please.

For more info: http://www.1gear1cause.org/
The movie trailer: http://www.ridethedividemovie.com/

It's a pretty amazing movie about what is arguably the hardest mountain bike race in the world. Participants ride offroad over 2,700 miles from Banff, Canada to the U.S. - Mexico border completely self supported. There are no teams, no support cars, no chefs, no mechanics. They carry their own gear, find their own food in the little mountain towns and deal with whatever comes their way.

http://www.tourdivide.org/

In June of 2011 I am going to be lining up at the start line of the Tour Divide on a Salsa Fargo converted to a singlespeed. I'm not racing the Tour Divide to win or to set any records. I'm racing the Tour Divide to fight cancer. There is an entire generation of men in my family that have been wiped out by cancer. While the old adage "Time heals all wounds" may sound great, the reality is that this wound only gets larger. Those men have left behind nearly 50 children who will never know their Grandfathers. Think about that for a minute. 50 kids who will never say "Grandpa, watch this!"

That's doesn't sit well with me. So I am going to try to do something about it! All proceeds from my fundraising events goes to Livestrong, the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Their cancer survivorship program is second to none. They give help, support and most importantly hope to people who have none.

My old friend Darren VanDreel gave me the suggestion that I should get in touch with you good folks at the Bay Shore Bike Club about getting the word out. Would it be possible to get on your calendar of events and also a mention in any emails you send out this week? That would be a huge help.

We've shown this both San Francisco and Minneapolis to great reviews from the cycling communities there. I'm looking forward to bringing it back to my home town this weekend!

Thanks for your time and help!
- Erik Mathy

East
River and Fox River Trails Connection Information and Updates:

The East River Trail Connection
will bridge the gap between Joannes Park and the Fox River Trail through the
historic Olde Main Street District. The first steps have already been
taken. Now it’s time to roll out the first draft of the plan and make the
trail a reality!

*The East River Trail Task Force
invites you to a public meeting:

Wednesday, April 28th at 7 PM at the
ARTgarage (1400 Main Street) - East River Trail Public Meeting digging into the details
of the plans and the impact. Nic Sparacio from the City of Green Bay
Planning Department to present. Come with any questions, comments,
concerns or suggestions. THere will be tons of time for Q&A and
discussion.

This "missing link" will
connect the urban environment to the natural beauty of our City Parks and the
East River. The trail will offer a safe area to enjoy recreational
activities or to just get from place to place. Everyone can enjoy the
trail!

Walkers

Runners

Bicyclists

Rollerbladers

Those in wheelchairs

The Concept

Planning for the trail connection is
in the early stages. Many local people are working on the project including
neighborhood associations, business people, trails advocates, the City of Green
Bay, and Olde Main Street Inc. The trail would eventually become part of the
City of Green Bay Parks system, and funding for this project would be
sought through grants and public/private partnerships. But before taking the
next steps, we would like your input and support.

The Vision

This connection will benefit the
entire regional trail system, but will especially become an asset to
neighboring homes and businesses. The success of the Fox River Recreational
Trail offers a shining local example of the positive impacts of new trails –
enhanced property values, enhanced health and wellness opportunities, economic
development, and neighborhood stabilization. But the East River corridor is
unique from the Fox River in many ways, and holds the potential to enhance the vibrant
urban environment of Olde Main Street and the Three Corners, Downtown, Joannes
and Navarino
Neighborhoods.

This section is an important
connection!

Help us develop the connection
between the Fox River Trail and the East River Trail through the Olde Main
Street District

Do you believe that we can make our
community better? Would you like to support a project that will enhance
Olde Main Street and the surrounding neighborhoods? Here’s your chance to
make a difference in a simple way: support the East River Trail
continuation!

The Opportunity

Economic Advantage: Increased access and
customer traffic in the Olde Main Street District.

Natural Capital: Improved accessibility and
visibility of the East River (traditionally a "hidden resource")
with restoration and beautification to come.

Safe Routes: More options for getting
to work, school and play in a safer way.

Healthy Living: Closer opportunities for more
neighborhood residents to walk, bike, run and rollerblade on an attractive
     trail.

Neighborhood Livability: Supporting the enjoyment,
attractiveness, and overall quality of life of downtown neighborhoods.

Business Climate: Supporting the redevelopment,
enhancement, and overall quality of the business district.

Supporters

Many community members, businesses
and organizations are supporting this project, we couldn't do it without
them! Thank you!

The board did not feel that we could field a sufficient number of volunteers to man the GU station and ride bikes with the runners.

RIDES: Dale reported that the ride calendar is full into August. The first run of the new folder system will be Wednesday at Becky’s ride from Humana. He would like to use brightly colored folders but the ones he has found so far are too flimsy.

The Velcro armbands did not work for the radios because the clips are broken. Rod is trying to get replacement parts. The board unanimously approved a motion to fund $30.00 for clips and pouches for the radios.

Ride Safety There was a general discussion about the policy when rides are called off. The board decided that the policy already in place stating that ‘if you go ahead of the leader, you are on your own’ extends to anyone deciding to ride when there is a weather related cancellation. Once the decision has been made to call off a ride, the leader should not hand out maps or cue sheets.

Chris asked the question ‘Are some of the rides too big? There was not a consensus of what number is too big but we may want to consider an informal split to alleviate some of the congestion a very large group causes. Perhaps at the regroup spots, the first group could leave when the second group arrives. This may need more discussion.

SOCIAL: Rod had no social news and the board congratulated and thanked him for all his work making the pot luck a success.

MEMBERSHIP: Membership numbers are low right now. Cathy will be gone for 1 month. Ellen will pick up the membership applications and send out the cards in her absence.

OLD BUSINESS:
Bike Jerseys Chris has been pushing the jerseys at rides, via email and the website. There are currently 25 orders.

Club Socks Lynn is waiting to hear from the sock guy.

Chris reported that the Road ID is very easy to order online.

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 10, 2010 at the Aging Resource Center. The meeting adjourned at 8:48 pm.

That made climbing nearly impossible. The problem wasn’t allergies, it wasn’t his legs; it was the hand.”

Madrid hand surgeon Ernesta Maria Fontana Fuentes said Thursday that the two-time Tour de France winner has been suffering from the problem for months, but it only recently became serious enough to put the rider’s season in doubt.

Fontana told reporters that four months ago she and her colleagues had originally prescribed physical therapy for lingering pain in Contador’s thumb and index finger, “but the problem really became serious during Paris-Nice. At one point, it became agonizing.”

Fontana said her diagnosis revealed extensive ligament damage in the area of Contador’s right index finger and thumb.

“It was a mystery,” Fontana said. “Alberto had no major accidents in training or while racing. There was no direct trauma.”

“We spent time with specialists,” Fontana said. “I had even contracted with Jean Wauthier, the ergonomics genius at the UCI, to see if we could find any cycling related movements that would cause such a strain. In the end, it had nothing to do with cycling – or at least the motions one generally associates with cycling.”

The source of the problem was revealed while Contador stayed at Fontana’s Mano clínica de Madrid for treatment two weeks ago.

“We kept him overnight,” said Fontana. “I came in one morning to schedule another therapy session when I saw Alberto standing in front of the mirror in his room. He was repeatedly making a hand gesture that put those muscles, tendons and ligaments under repeated strain.”

Asked to describe the gesture, Fontana said it most closely resembled “someone perhaps shooting a gun … a pistol, if you will.”

The agony of victory?

“Wauthier immediately pointed out that this gesture has caused extraordinary strain,” said Fontana. “It’s not the gesture itself, but the vigor he applies when doing it and the frequency with which he uses it. It is a form of repetitive motion syndrome … almost like a worker on an assembly line.”

“Alberto ‘shoots his pistol’ as many as 200 or 300 times a day,” noted Fontana. “He does it when he gets his coffee from the waitress in the morning, when he sees an old friend on the street … even in romantic settings. Beyond that he practices, sometimes for up to an hour a day in front of the mirror. It has finally caused damage; damage that would have been irreparable had we not caught it when we did.”

Following Thursday’s surgery, Fontana said Contador will spend a week recovering at the Spanish seaside resort of Marbella and then resume physical therapy.

“The therapy is rigorous and it requires him to repeatedly jam his right arm upward with his middle finger pointed to the sky,” Fontana said. “It relaxes the affected area, and exercises the surrounding muscle structures; those areas that had essentially atrophied over the past few years.”

Fontana said the exercise, like the damaging gesture, is also repetitive, but staff have “placed a poster of a certain former Tour de France winner on the hospital wall to aid in the otherwise arduous therapy.”

Contador was not available for immediate comment, but a spokesman told VeloNews that “he is tranquil, his sensations are good and he’s looking forward to resuming the therapy. He’s actually quite enthusiastic about the new exercises.”

Read more: http://velonews.competitor.com/2010/04/news/reconstructive-surgery-places-contadors-season-in-doubt_110106#ixzz0jsUwR1ka

Check out this story of an inspiring 90 year old area bicyclist!

Got this from a friend who saw it in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Here is the link to the story:
http://www.jsonline.com/news/ozwash/88742317.html

Here is the story:

90-year-old Has Pedal Power Aplenty

90-year-old man bikes 20 miles a day The blunt truth is that most people
won't make it to their 90th birthday. Those who do are not the target market
of Wheel & Sprocket.

Then there's Ed Braun.

He turned 90 last week, on St. Patrick's Day actually, and he spent part of
his birthday doing what he does most every day. He rides 15 to 20 miles on a
bicycle along with a few much younger retired buddies.

I went along and, rusty from not riding all winter, did my best to keep up.
Ed hardly broke a sweat in his Adidas warm-up gear, despite temperatures
approaching 60. Not out of breath in the least, he talked effortlessly as we
rode side by side.

This man's ease on that Trek mountain bike is like a sharp stick in the eye
of time's usual ravages.

"I just thank the good Lord that I'm living and I'm healthy and that I'm
able to do what I'm doing," he said.

People who hazard a guess think he's around 70, Ed said. Not to brag or
anything.

Talk about the other guys in the group, Ed kept telling me, especially
73-year-old Jerry Freeck who got him into this cycling habit. Also on the
birthday ride were John Bergman, 74, and Bruce Unger, 63.

They formed a club called MFOG, Menomonee Falls Old Geezers. No bylaws. No
meetings. No dues. Just rides. They all live in Menomonee Falls, except for
Bruce in Brookfield. Tom Rogahn is also in the group but couldn't make it on
Wednesday.

None of the men knew the others as recently as five years ago. That's when
Ed was passing by Jerry's house and noticed he had some bikes in the
driveway. They got talking. Jerry asked Ed if he wanted to ride with him,
and Ed said he would. The other guys joined them later after random
encounters.

So Ed didn't take up serious biking until he was 85. That's right about when
he retired for the last time.

Edmund Braun is greatest generation all the way. He was born in a log cabin
in northern Wisconsin in 1920, but moved at age 2 to a Milwaukee
neighborhood near 8th and Clarke. Because of the Great Depression, he
skipped high school and worked instead on a farm. Neither of his parents
lived to 70.

Two months before the attack on Pearl Harbor, Ed enlisted in the Marines. He
served in the Pacific during World War II and received a Purple Heart. After
the war, he married sweetheart Evelyn, and they're still together 63 years
later. They raised two boys.

Ed was a Milwaukee policeman for 29 years, retiring as a detective in 1981.
His wife proudly showed me yellowed newspaper articles about arrests he made
and bullets he dodged. One headline reads: "Old legs outlast young in 6
block steeplechase." Ed, then 45, caught a 17-year-old suspect after
pursuing him through yards and over fences. Those legs, now twice as old,
obviously still serve Ed well.

After he put away his badge, Ed worked in security at Falk for a couple
years and then 22 years as a courier for the Foley & Lardner law firm,
mostly on foot and always on the stairs rather than the elevator.

He didn't know it at the time, but he was laying the groundwork for being a
nonagenarian kid on a bike. Sometimes he really airs it out, going up to 45
miles in a day.

"My dad is in excellent shape. He climbed the bluff at Devil's Lake five
years ago," said son Bruce.

"We never thought he'd live this long. Me, too," said Evelyn, 86. "It's a
long life and a good life."

She worries about her husband if he's gone too long, but she knows the guys
are watching out for him. He took a spill on his bike last March, chipping a
hip bone and tearing muscles.

"He became a celebrity at the hospital. Everybody came to see the
89-year-old bike rider," his son said.

Falling on a hip at that age can be devastating. Ed was back on the bike in
about six weeks. He rides all winter, too, when it's not too slippery or too
cold. It's the code of the MFOG.

"He is unbelievable. I'm so proud to know this gentleman. I don't know if
I'll even be alive at that age," Jerry told me.

"I like being with the guys and hearing their stories," Ed said. He learned
that John, for instance, lived with his wife and young son on a sailboat in
the West Indies for 10 years. Jerry has ridden his bike all over Europe.
Bruce was a drug and alcohol counselor who then opened a photo studio.

By my odometer, we rode 15.3 miles through the Falls and Brookfield on quiet
streets and busy ones and along winter-scarred parkways. We stopped at Fox
Brook Park on Barker Road. Bruce pulled out a bottle of champagne, and John
surprised Ed with a plate of mini-muffins.

We lit a candle on one muffin and sang to Ed. We toasted him with paper
cups.

And we agreed to meet for a ride on his 100th birthday.

Call Jim Stingl at (414) 224-2017 or e-mail at jstingl@journalsentinel.com
